A SEAT FOR THE SOUL

I create to remember, to heal, and to hold space for stories that refuse to be forgotten.

A SPACE TO BE REMEMBERED

WHY BENCHES?

Benches may seem simple, but they are powerful tools for community connection. Each one invites people to pause, rest, reflect, and engage. By placing benches in key public spaces across New Haven, we’re creating opportunities for neighbors to meet, share stories, and discover the histories that bind us together. These benches aren’t just places to sit — they’re spaces to belong.

This bench honors Harriet Tubman and William Lanson, two leaders whose lives illuminate New Haven’s deep ties to liberations, resilience and community refuge. Harriet Tubman guided enslaved people to freedom. William Lanson – builder, engineer and abolitionist expanded Long Wharf and supported the Amistad captains. Placed near historic Underground Railroad churches, it invites us to honor the courage that shaped the journey to freedom.

Dixwell Avenue once pulsed with world-class jazz. Legends such as Billie Holiday, Ella
